Feel Real True Horror at Full-Bodysuit Cosplay Cafe This July 25th

On July 25th 2009, from 10am to 4pm, Tokyo's Cafe & Bar DiCE! will be turned into a place of terror, borne from the stuff of nightmares. It will turn into Aokazetei, a full-body kigurumi cosplay waitress cafe.

For the fortunate few who are unaware, "kigurumi" cosplay can be best described as mascot cosplay, wherein the cosplayer dons a full-body suit and mask. While the term itself is quite general, covering everything from mecha cosplay to the sorts of animal suits worn by furry enthusiasts, this particular variant concentrates on wearing full facemasks with the design proportions to suit the characters and costumes.

I can imagine it now, a kigurumi waitress approaching your table and asking for your order, the voice muffled by the freakish, dead-eyed mask. Gah! Well...at least they're not inflating themselves.

Hit the gallery for psychological trauma.

Gothic Lolita Day was held over at my favorite Japanese Bookstore Kinukoniya; located on 6th Avenue and 41st. Street. I unfortunately was only able to attend the latter half of the event and had missed the bulk of the crowds. I must admit that I know very little about this particular fashion movement I am an anime/figure collector. The attendees were extremely friendly and willing to share their experience and knowledge with me. I found that everyone was having a great time and for me the subject matter is great for photography. So without further ado here are the photos a took. Enjoy!

Otakon 2009 Press Release: Tony Oliver to Make Appearance

Voice Actor/Producer Tony Oliver to Appear at Otakon

Best Known for Work on Robotech, Power Rangers

Baltimore, MD (May 22, 2009) – American voice actor Tony Oliver, best known for his voice work as Rick Hunter from Robotech and Arsene Lupin III from Lupin The 3rd, and for his writing and producing work on various Power Rangers series, will be a guest at Otakon 2009.

For more than 25 years, Oliver has acted on stage and on camera, but his real success has been in voiceover work – starting with The Sea Prince and the Fire Child, the first foreign-made animated feature to get wide release in the US. His resumé spans many diverse and well-loved roles and series from the past several years, along with an increasing number of video games. Along the way, he's spent nearly as much time writing, directing, and producing as he's spent acting. For over 10 years he wrote and produced various series for Saban Entertainment, eventually producing (and writing, directing, and promoting) the hit sentai adaptation of the live-action Japanese series, Zyu-Rangers, known in the US as Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.

From the title role in Lupin the 3rd: The Movie - The Secret of Mamo to Robotech's Rick Hunter to Sorata Arisugawa in the X-TV series, Oliver's career includes a part in just about every genre - including sentai (he was the voice of Saba, the White Ranger's talking saber in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers). In addition, Oliver can be heard in Last Exile, Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach, Lucky Star, Eyeshield 21, Wolf's Rain and Mahoromatic, among others. His directing credits include Eureka Seven, Hare Guu and Please Teacher.

His recent projects include Gurren Lagann, .hack//GU, and Eureka Seven.

Oliver appears courtesy of Bang Zoom! Entertainment. Through Bang Zoom! he has been teaching classes about voice acting, known as Adventures in Voice Acting. The beginners' classes teach basic techniques, while the intermediate course discusses development of characters and more advanced techniques.

Otakon 2009 will be held July 17-19 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Otakuden's Own, Renegade Star is Huge in Japan!

All of us at Otakuden are incredibly excited and very proud to announce that one of our own, Renegade Star was just featured on Japanese television. Wow... so cool. I'll leave it to Renegade Star to explain what I'm talking about:

So, in Japan, there is a TV show called 'CosCosPlayPlay', where everyone dresses up in cosplay and interviews voice actors and celebrities while they too cosplay. In this particular episode, the hosts of the show were lucky enough to have the voice actress of Nia from Gurren Lagann in the studio with them. Near the end of the show, they decided to show her some images of cosplayers from all around the world and I was picked to be shown as well! (3:20 as Messenger Nia) I feel very honored to have had my picture shown to a Seiyuu that I respect so much and actually have her say that I pull off the character well and that I looked amazing. I'm still very shocked about this. What a rush, ya know?"
Last time I posted some pictures of Megan in a long sweater covering her costume on the set of Jonah Hex (you can view them here). Now we get the official first look at what she will look like, wearing a sexy wild west prostitute outfit. Damn does she look hot !!

I’ve said this many times, Megan fox can’t act but the fact that she’s rated the hottest woman on earth makes her acting worth watching her movies. I’ve never heard of Jonah Hex until they green lit the movie and from the pics I cant wait to freakin’ see it. Thanks to phreecelebs from PhunForums for the pics.

Asami Shimoda Secret Seiyuu Cosplay

Seiyuu / Asami Shimoda (or Asapon), most known for her role as the Futami twins in the Idolmaster franchise, is suspected by 2ch of engaging in some unannounced cosplay, here photographed wearing a uniform from visual novel ToHeart 2, during C66 (the summer Comiket of 2004).

There is no concrete confirmation as to which is which, but the deciding factor in tying the pair is the mole by her nose, present in both images…
Cosplaying seiyuu or not, fans are of course highly appreciative of her and of her mysterious doppelganger…

Mortal Kombat's Frost Much Hotter In Person

There's cosplay, and then there's fetish model cosplay. Marie-Claude Bourbonnais does glorious things with her portrayal of Mortal Kombat's resident female Sub-Zero.

Frost was one of the less interesting additions to the Mortal Kombat roster in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, but suddenly I get the overwhelming urge to give her another try. Marie-Claude Bourbonnais pulls off Frost just as well if not better than she did Caitlin Fairchild from the Image comic book Gen 13. I could have sworn that Frost had more clothing, but I'm not going to be the guy to ruin it for everyone else by pointing that out.

While Marie-Claude's body certainly fills out the costume, Gil Perron's amazing photography makes it sing.
Joshy Pillbox here. I gotta share this with you guys. This Den Keeper knows I'm a musician so he sent me the link to this image:

This is probably the hottest thing I've seen in a week. Help me out guys, I'm relatively new to Cosplay. Who is she dressed up as? I wonder if they have a matching PVC Figure with a guitar I can pick up. The image is from Daily Costume. A lot of the images are of cosplayers, but some are just chicks in bikinis. Is the girl with the guitar even a cosplayer?! HELP ME!!!

AnimeUSA Review- Growing Pains for the Little Convention

With all the recent large conventions that occur during the late summer months, the fall is a welcomed breath of fresh air. It is during this charming time of year that the small conventions can really take the spotlight, allowing for a much more social aspect as compared to something like Otakon and New York Anime Fest.

AnimeUSA, which is held in Crystal City, VA, was held at the infamous Hyatt Regency Crystal City, which has played host to many other various anime conventions in the past. This hotel is an ideal location for an anime convention, due to its multi-tier convention floors. With the usage of easy accessible escalators to the various floors, it was the perfect way to get an easy lay of the land and figure out where everything was located very quickly right upon entrance to the area.

The panels and workshops were very large and extensive, offering great pieces of advice on everything from voice acting to cosplaying tips. I actually had the pleasure of being a panelist for this con, speaking about Crossplaying. Not only was staff very helpful in getting my badges and my room set up, but they gave me a larger room which was proven needed since we hit max capacity. Every single person who attended was enthused to be there and we flat out had a great time. And from what I heard from others, every panel seemed to go off in the same fashion.

As always, masquerades are the center focus of any convention for a cosplayer or just a fan. For the first time since Otakon this past year, I actually got to participate in the actual masquerade. The tech staff was absolutely amazing, offering some great ideas for lighting and special effects if needed. They were willing to go the extra mile to make sure that everything went off without a flaw, and it did.

As for the skits themselves, I can safely tell our fine readers that there was NO Haruhi, Carmel Dancin’, or Lucky Star. Ladies and gentlemen- the perfect masquerade in my personal opinion. A lot of the skits were amusing and fun to watch (though our audio was really crappy backstage. (My lone complaint on the masquerade set-up) The winner of Best in Show was cute and funny, bringing a new light onto the classic Tenchi series. Some other under appreciated series finally got some time in the spotlight, such as Trauma Center, Harvest Moon, and Super Mario Bros. And my group and I were out to mess with the Final Fantasy franchise and succeed very much so. It was a very clean and well-run masquerade: and it even started on time and ended on time!

But, like every convention, there are the downers. The major one being one of the musical guests left their fans waiting for almost four hours in a stuffy line outside main events because of the band members threw a drama queen fit. This left a lot of people very upset and not even interested in seeing the band for the weekend because they turned out to be a huge disappointment.

Another downside was the cramped feeling on a lot of the con floors. While some areas were spacious and not congested, there were points where you couldn’t even move without hitting someone else. This sadly brought out some of the creeper anime fans, as I myself was subject to a guy trying to get an upskirt shot while I was on the phone. Unfortunately for him, he ended up with a broken nose after the heel of my boot found his face. But that’s a story for another time.

The last complaint that others (including myself) had was the elevators. There were six elevators in the hotel and by the end of the day on Friday; one was already out of service. They were slow, stopping nearly on every floor, making wait times for them annoying and a hassle. I have never seen so many people take to the stairs during a con before. Some were even willing to climb up sixteen flights because it was a shorter walk than waiting for the elevators.

Overall, AUSA offered a lot of fun activities for the con goers to enjoy themselves in a comfortable atmosphere. The only issue seems to be that the con is suffering growing pains. With the convention returning to the same hotel next year, I question how well they will fair when it comes to manage their numbers. Well, whatever happens, I hope this con remains just as awesome as it has been. Good people and good times: just what a convention should be.

Footnote: For any anime fans who are located in the New Jersey/New York/PA area, don’t forget to check out MangaNEXT on Halloween weekend in Somerset, NJ! I’ll even be there giving a lecture on cons and cosplay etiquette (18+ only though! Sorry to our younger readers) So come and check it out. I’ll be writing a review, but you should experience it for yourself!
